Honolulu – The Honolulu Symphony Chorus invites the community to a free recital featuring the guest artists of the Hawaii International Choral Festival on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in the Mission Memorial Auditorium. The annual Mid-Festival Artists Recital showcases renowned Festival guest artists: mezzo-soprano Leneida Crawford, soprano Vicki Gorman, baritone Burr Cochran-Phillips, in an intimate and relaxed setting as they perform beautiful songs by Debussy, Fauré and Hartmann.

Joining the Festival guest artists are three gifted local students who have been expressly selected to take part in the recital. Baritone Keane Ishii of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and mezzo-soprano Pauline Taumalolo of Leeward Community College will perform arias from operas such as Gounod’s Faust and Bizet’s Carmen. Soprano Naomi Castro of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa will perform a work by Debussy together with the Na Leo Kuho’okahi Ensemble of the Hawai’i Youth Opera Chorus. As part of the Chorus’ educational outreach, the students and their peers will also participate in a private master class with the Festival guest artists.

Generously presented by the Symphony Associates volunteers and the Oahu Choral Society, this community event is open to the public and no tickets are required. Please, join us for this charming recital that pays homage to French music!

Now in its eleventh year, the Hawaii International Choral Festival is a week-long study of major choral-orchestral works with distinguished faculty, followed by performances with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. Presented by the Oahu Choral Society and the Honolulu Symphony, the Festival draws an international roster of talented singers to Hawaii and fosters an exchange of choral skills and experiences through master classes, rehearsals and the free recital.

The beautiful Requiems of French composers Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé take center stage at the Eleventh Annual Hawaii International Choral Festival on Friday, April 11 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 12 at 8 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The Honolulu Symphony and Chorus will be joined by gifted singers from Hawaii and around the world in performances that stand as the crowing events of the week-long Festival. As part of the Festival’s mission to celebrate choral music and Hawaiian culture, the concerts incorporate Hula and Hawaiian traditions, thus making the Honolulu Symphony and Chorus performances truly distinctive on the world stage.

Conducted by Dr. Karen Kennedy, the Choral Festival performances feature mezzo-soprano Leneida Crawford, soprano Vicki Gorman, bass-baritone Burr Cochran-Phillips, and organist Mark Wong performing on the CDS Concert Organ. Dr. Kennedy, a former Chorus Director, returns to Hawaii to lead the Festival. Among the groups joining the Symphony and Chorus on stage are the University of Hawaii Chamber singers and the Honolulu Chorale.
