In his inspiring tenth season as Honolulu Symphony Pops Conductor, Maestro Matt Catingub continues to bring contemporary music’s most exciting artists, as well as his own unique and beautiful arrangements, to the Pops stage. Maestro Catingub’s latest CD release is “Return to Romance” with the Matt Catingub Orchestra of Hawaii. It combines his lush orchestrations with the artistry of numerous gifted Hawaiian singers, including Raiatea Helm, Amy Hanaiali‘i Gilliom, Na Leo Pilimehana, Jimmy Borges and Keali‘i Reichel – many of whom are audience favorites at Pops concerts.

Maestro Catingub’s recent accolades include his 1950s-style jazz arrangements for the Grammy-Award-winning soundtrack to the film, “Good Night and Good Luck” featuring Dianne Reeves with Maestro Catingub on saxophone. Most recently, Maestro Catingub’s arrangements were featured on the new CD “Blues In The Night” by multi-platinum-selling songwriter and singer Ann Hampton Callaway,

Honolulu Symphony Toyota Pops 2007-2008 season highlights include the “Lost” Symphony at the Waikiki Shell, singer-songwriter Burt Bacharach, the debut of smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G, an evening of musical delights in “The Golden Age of Hawaii,” and the return of Keali’i Reichel. For the holidays, the Pops features the fantastic double-bill: “A Motown Christmas with The Four Tops and the Spinners,” at the Blaisdell Arena. And, the Toyota Pops season opens in August with legendary music icons, Three Dog Night

Now entering their fourth decade, Three Dog Night brings with them some of the most amazing statistics in popular music. In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group had more top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night. Their hits appeared on best selling charts in all genres (pop, rock and country). Boasting chart and sales records that are virtually unmatched in popular music, Three Dog Night had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, 18 straight Top 20s, 11 Top 10s, 3 number 1s, 7 million-selling singles and 12 straight RIAA Certified Gold LPs.

This year, the group will add to their vast catalogue with the release of “Extended Versions – Live” on Sony/BMG, giving fans – new and old – a chance to experience their dynamic live show of instantly familiar tunes with customary impeccable harmonies and exciting arrangements that define Three Dog Night’s signature sound.

Originally brought together in 1968 by Danny Hutton and Cory Wells, the group was enormously successful from the start. Hutton, who had graduated from loading and unloading records at the Disney studio to recording as a solo artist, met Cory Wells while he was touring with Sonny and Cher. The now-famous name came from a story about Australian aborigines who, on cold nights in the outback, sleep with their dogs for warmth. The coldest evenings are known as “three dog nights.”

Three Dog Night recorded the music of the best (and mostly undiscovered) new songwriters of their time including Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton, among many others. The group’s eclectic taste, combined with their ability to recognize and record hits in a unique, distinctive and appealing style, resulted in Three Dog Night dominating best-selling charts for years.

Now, after nearly 40 years on the road, Three Dog Night continues to grow its fan base and develop new ways of doing business. Since 1986, they have performed more than 2,000 shows including two Super Bowls. And, in another step forward, Three Dog Night will be recording and releasing a new studio album in 2007.

The Honolulu Symphony Toyota Pops series is made possible thanks to the generosity of our season sponsor, Toyota Dealers of Hawaii.
