Carnegie Hall’s 2008-09 Communities LinkUP!
America: My Country, My Music
Grades 3 through 6
This interactive concert creates an exciting, hands-on concert experience where students actually perform with the Honolulu Symphony. Co-sponsored by the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, the program is intended for students (grades 3–6) who practice with their teacher in class, singing and/or playing the recorder in preparation for the big performance day. (Please note: Teachers who register for LinkUP! are asked to make a steadfast commitment and required to attend Professional Development LinkUP! for Teachers, a 3-hour workshop.)In 2008-09, the Honolulu Symphony has increased the number of LinkUP! performances to ten (10) concerts. Musical selections from this year’s program will include such memorable works as:
- Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody” (“Simple Gifts”, from Appalachian Spring)
- “Summertime”, from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess
- Selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story
- Hawai‘i Pono‘i
- Medley of traditional Hawaiian songs “Pupu Hinuhinu” and “Kahuli Aku”
Student admission to the concert is $2. All chaperones are free. Curriculum materials are provided free of charge; however, school are required to provide recorders (approx. $5 each) for their students. All programs subject to change.
