Honolulu Symphony Returns to the Airwaves on Hawaii Public Radio

HPR on-air personalities and leaders host Symphony’s “Concert Conversations” pre-concert discussions

Honolulu – The Honolulu Symphony and Hawaii Public Radio (HPR) today announced that “Symphony Spectrum,” the popular monthly program spotlighting Symphony concerts and artists, has returned to its monthly time-slot. Beginning this fall, KHPR music director Gene Schiller hosts dynamic and informative live interviews with Symphony artists and conductors during one-hour “Symphony Spectrum” broadcasts. The beautiful music of upcoming Symphony concerts will also be previewed. Listeners can anticipate another season of enlightening repartee as guests go head-to-head with Schiller.

The next installment of “Symphony Spectrum,” which combines a talk-show format with music, will be broadcast live on Wednesday, November 12 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with special guest, acclaimed conductor JoAnn Falletta. Maestra Falletta will conduct the Symphony’s upcoming Halekulani MasterWorks concert on November 15 and 16, featuring Rodrigo’s classical guitar masterpiece, Fantasia para un gentilhombre.

“Symphony Spectrum” listeners can tune in at KHPR 88.1 FM, Honolulu; K203EL 88.5 FM, Haleiwa and Schofield Barracks; KKUA 90.7 FM, Wailuku (serving Maui, Molokai, Lanai and North Hawaii); and KANO 91.1 FM, Hilo.

“It is an honor to partner with Hawaii Public Radio as we extend the Symphony’s reach across the airwaves and beyond the concert hall,” said Tom Gulick, executive director, Honolulu Symphony. “The Symphony strives to offer all of Hawaii unique enrichment experiences that are infused with the magic of music-making. ‘Symphony Spectrum’ will bring learning opportunities to more people, including those who are unable to travel to concerts.”

In addition, the Symphony and HPR announced that HPR personalities, including Schiller, arts and culture reporter Noë Tanagawa, and director of promotion Judy Neale, will host the Symphony’s pre-concert lecture series, “Concert Conversations.”

Offered free to all ticket-holders, “Concert Conversations” offers insights into the music on the concert program and takes place before each Halekulani MasterWorks series concert throughout the season. These informal and educational talks often feature conductors, musicians and guest artists who drop by to offer exclusive observations about the evening’s performance. With HPR hosts, who will rotate between concerts, “Concert Conversations” now offers deeper insights and more audience interaction than ever before.
