Honolulu – In the grand tradition created by Arthur Fiedler – long-time conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra – the Honolulu Symphony presents a showcase of relaxing, light classics in the “All-Strauss Experience” on Saturday, November 8 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 9 at 4 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. This charming presentation features the irresistible melodies of “The Waltz King,” Johann Strauss Junior, who popularized the waltz in the nineteenth century. Included in this perfect weekend of music are the magical Emperor Waltz and amusing polkas, as well as the Overture to the Gypsy Baron.
To complete the “All-Strauss Experience,” Maestro Andreas Delfs leads the orchestra in two works by another illustrious yet un-related Strauss – Richard Strauss – whose youthful Oboe Concerto in D Major features oboist J. Scott Janusch. All those who enjoy light classics will cherish the “All-Strauss Experience” as the Symphony presents stirring fare that has ranked high on audience favorite lists for generations. Tickets start from only $19. Student/youth & chaperone/parent tickets are always $10.
Composed circa 1945-46, Strauss’ Oboe Concert was, in part, motivated by John De Lancie – the later famous principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra – who visited Strauss at his home in the Bavarian Alps during the last few weeks of World War II. As a young American soldier, De Lancie met Strauss several times and once asked why he had not composed a major work for the oboe – an instrument that Strauss clearly appreciated, as reflected in his tone poems and operas. Several months after De Lancie’s last visit, the world received news that Strauss was embarking upon a major work for the instrument. The result – the Concerto in D Major – features a rich orchestral palette and is among the
oboe repertoire’s most romantic and inspired musical journeys.
