Honolulu Symphony Chorus Announces Auditions

Symphony Chorus season features Orff’s Carmina Burana

Honolulu – The Honolulu Symphony Chorus today announced open auditions for all voice parts for the 2008-2009 season, which includes performances with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and an enlivening variety of recitals held across Oahu. Experienced singers are encouraged and welcome to audition. Auditions take place from Monday, August 11 to Saturday, August 16, 2008 in Davies Hall at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, located at the corner of Beretania and Queen Emma Streets in Honolulu. Auditions are open to all singers who are at least 18 years of age or who have graduated from high school. Interested singers wishing to reserve an audition slot may contact the Chorus Manager, Ross Taosaka at symphonychorus@gmail.com or 524-0815, ext. 257.

All singers who successfully pass the audition will be invited to join the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and participate in concerts featuring masterworks such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture during the Honolulu Symphony’s 2008-2009 upcoming season.

Auditioning singers should bring sheet music for a piece of their choice and be prepared to sing the piece for the Artistic Director Esther Yoo. The piece can be an art song, aria or hymn. The Chorus encourages pieces of a classical nature. An accompanist will be provided. All singers will be voiced to assess range, quality, diction and sight-reading ability.

The first rehearsal of the season will be on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa Music Department, Room 36 (corner of Dole Street and University Avenue).

The Honolulu Symphony Chorus is a professional-level, volunteer chorus. Annual dues are $180 for the entire season. Scholarships are available for full-time students and for those with financial need. Visit www.oahuchoral.com for more information.

The Oahu Choral Society is a non-profit corporation in support of the Honolulu Symphony Chorus.
