HONOLULU – Honolulu’s own Noel Okimoto will open for jazz superstar Dave Koz at the upcoming Honolulu Symphony Toyota Pops season finale on Saturday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waikiki Shell. Maestro Matt Catingub is planning a unique night under the stars for concertgoers, who will enjoy time with Okimoto to begin this exciting performance. Recognized as a world-class drummer, Okimoto is also a seasoned vibraphonist and orchestral percussionist. The show continues as Koz takes the stage with the ultimate in smooth jazz renditions of songs such as “Over the Rainbow,” “As Time Goes By,” “The Way We Were,” “Moon River” and many more. Tickets start from only $15. Mahalo to the John Chin Young Foundation for making this concert possible.
Before the concert, the whole community is also invited to enjoy the first-ever Symphony Fair, which will take place outside the Waikiki Shell from noon to 5 p.m. Admission for this family-friendly event is $3 per person and admission for children under 12 is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring items such as tents, lawn chairs and blankets, and stay for the afternoon.
More than twenty musical performing groups from across O`ahu have volunteered to perform at the Symphony Fair. Other attractions include a musical instrument “petting zoo,” hosted by the Honolulu Symphony musicians, food concession stands, face painting, sign painting and other fun activities. In addition, ‘ukulele virtuoso, Jake Shimabukuro will be signing autographs from noon to 1:00 p.m. and local jazz favorite, Jimmy Borges will be appearing from noon to 3:00 p.m.
There will be also be opportunities to talk with Symphony musicians and staff members, and to contribute to the Symphony’s Hana Laulima fundraising campaign. Mahalo to sponsor Menehune Water for their generous support of this event.
About Noel Okimoto
Born and raised in Honolulu, Noel has been playing professionally since the age of ten, and is now considered one of the best drummers in Hawaii. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Percussion from the University of Hawaii and has played in Hawaii, the Mainland, and internationally with Freddie Hubbard, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson, Riche Cole, Bill Watrous, Ernie Watts, Bud Shank, Barney Kessel, Lew Tabackin, Sadao Watanabe, Wynton Marsalis, and Ronnie Cuber, among others. He was also a member of the Gabe Baltazar group for five years.
Noel has recently performed with Jake Shimabukuro, Makoto Ozone, Jeff Richman, Larry Coryell, Nestor Torres, Gene Harris, Take 6 and more. Noel also recorded an award-winning jazz CD in 2004, “Ohana.” Noel is also a very accomplished orchestral percussionist, vibist, composer and clinician. He has played percussion with many luminaries, including Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, Steve Allen, Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, and Dionne Warwick.
