Honolulu – Singers from the Honolulu Symphony Chorus will honor Robert (Bob) S. Hines for his contributions to the arts in Hawaii at their annual fundraiser for community programs on Saturday, February 28 at 6:00 p.m. at the Wai‘alae Country Club. Hines was unanimously selected as the event’s honoree due to his lifelong commitment to sharing live choral music with all people. Tickets are currently on sale for $70 per person.
In its eighth year, the Honolulu Symphony Chorus Annual Benefit honors individuals who have helped the community in meaningful ways. Hines, who has held many prestigious academic positions during his career, served as dean of the College of Arts and Humanities of the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1980 to 1984. He was appointed professor emeritus of the music department in 1994.
Hines is the author of several books, including “The Composer’s Point of View: Choral Music,” “Choral Composition: A Handbook for Composers, Arrangers, Conductors and Singers,” and “Singers’ Liturgical Latin.” In addition, Hines has served in many volunteer roles, including the boards of PBS Hawaii, Honolulu Chamber Music Series and the Arthur and Mae Z. Orvis Foundation.
The evening’s entertainment features the acclaimed Concordia Choir, conducted by Dr. René Clausen. Considered one of the world’s premier a cappella choirs, the Concordia Choir is based at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. The 74-voice choir has performed in nearly every major hall in the United States, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. More information about the choir is available at http://www.cord.edu/Music/Ensembles/Choirs/choir1.php.
In addition, the Solmati quartet returns by popular demand to enliven the benefit with a blend of jazz and pop standards, innovative arrangements of classical and ragtime, and original music. Solmati features singer and pianist Ruth Shiroma Foster, clarinetist Norm Foster, double bassist John Gallagher and violinist Duane Padilla. Foster, Gallagher and Padilla are members of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. Shiroma Foster sings with the Honolulu Symphony Chorus and is an active songwriter.
