IIn 2008-09 the Honolulu Symphony Society Education and Outreach Department continued the expansion of their music literacy programs with the Music Acceleration Program (MAP), a pilot program at Nanakuli Elementary School. The program was 14 weeks long and all 4th, 5th and 6th graders, approximately 190 students, had the unique opportunity to learn how to play a recorder and read music. The program was taught by Honolulu Symphony Society Education and Outreach staff and they were assisted by Honolulu Symphony Society musicians. The students also experienced five different Symphony ensembles: String Quartet, Wind Quintet, Brass Quintet, Percussion Trio and Mixed Ensemble. As the culminating event, the Students performed with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra at the Youth Concert in April 2009. While we face the challenges of reorganization and are not currently providing any education and outreach services, we will emerge from the reorganization with an even greater emphasis on education and outreach as a way of being relevant to the community. A “Musical Clubhouse” is one new concept that will be introduced as an afterschool program, teaching students music and introduces them to all aspects of the symphony industry.
